Kazakhstan Delegation Visit IEECAS

As the invitation of Prof. Xiaolin Hou, the delegation of the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, including Dr. Oksana Lyakhova and Ms. Alua M. Kabdyrakova, visited the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEECAS) during April 4-8th, 2016.

Prof. Xiaolin Hou, head of 129I Laboratory of Xi’an AMS Center, IEECAS hosted the bilateral meeting and welcomed the delegation of the institute on April 5th, 2016. Dr. Feng Xian, vice director of State Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, IEECAS, gave a brief introduction about the history of Xi’an AMS Center, IEECAS and highlight research achievement and progress. Dr. Oksana Lyakhova and Ms. Alua M. Kabdyrakova then gave talks entitled “Scientific activities of IRSE and about Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS)” and “Speciation of man-made radionuclides in soil at Semipalatinsk Test Site”, respectively. They presented inventory of radioactive materials, soil-agricultural products transfer factors of radionuclides (239,240Pu, 241Am, 90Sr, 137Cs, etc), dose loads of population living in potential STS impact zone, as well as some findings on soil decontamination at the STS territory. Some investigation results were also shown in particular concentrations of radionuclides at the areas in and beyond the STS boundary greatly affected by nuclear explosions. Research assistant Dr. Luyuan Zhang and Dr. Shan Xing of IEECAS introduced the progress on analysis and application of aerosol 129I, and radionuclides level in Chinese soil. Following the meeting, the delegation visited the laboratories of Xi’an AMS Center, including 3 MV AMS system and laboratories of 14C, 10Be and 129I. They gave high praise for our work in Xi’an AMS Center. On April 6th, the delegation had wide academic discussions with the staffs of our Center, mainly focusing on analytical methods of radionuclides, environmental radioactivity level at the STS territory, and environmental migration of radionuclides. On April 7th, both sides had further academic exchange on long-term laboratory collaboration and sampling scheme around STS zone of Kazakhstan.

The Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology of the National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan (IRSE, NNC) primarily engages in monitoring of nuclear safety level, in which the major responsibility of this institute is monitoring of radioecological level and nuclear safety level at and arround the STS territory. They have carried out long-term determination and level monitoring of radionuclides in different environmental samples at the STS. The institute is one of important laboratories in the field of nuclear safety and environmental radioactivity. They have built extensive partnership with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other agencies, and organized four international conferences on radiation safety of STS.

The visit of Kazakhstan delegation has greatly facilitated the accomplishment of the project of Fundamental Scientific Research from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, “Fingerprint Development of Environmental Radioactivity Level in China”, headed by Prof. Xiaolin Hou of IEECAS. One of the objectives of this project is to achieve fingerprint information of radionuclides at the STS for identifying radionuclides sources in China and providing basic data for nuclear safety in China. IRSE, NNC is one of the important collaborating objects of this project. By this visit, closer cooperation, exchange of scientific information and knowledge with the institute, and conducting radioanalysis of fingerprint radionuclides in environmental samples of Kazakhstan would greatly enhance accuracy of the research and contribute to accomplish the project at a high level.

The delegation member, Dr. Oksana Lyakhova, researcher, head of Department for Designing of Environment Monitoring Systems, IRSE, NNC, mainly focuses on design of method for verification of underground nuclear explosion venues by using tritium as an indicator, design and development monitoring system to control air and water environmental contamination, preparation of specific chapters of Environmental Impact Assessment and annual reports. Ms. Alua M. Kabdyrakova, senior engineer, is the head of Physical Chemistry Group, IRSE, NNC. Her major responsibility is to study of 239+240Pu, 241Am, 137Cs and 90Sr distribution in soil particle-size fractions under different condition of radioactive contamination. She is also the key participant in the scientific collaboration project “Study on Environmental Radioactivity Level” between China Academy of Sciences and Russia-Ukraine-Belarus.
